With the arrival of the new year - and new millennium - this is
a great time to encourage your employees to revisit their personal
and professional objectives. From a psychological perspective, we
tend to have a lot of energy to devote to goal setting at this time
of the year. Book an hour with your employees over the coming weeks
to sit down with them and help them map out some goals for the coming
year. However, instead of focusing on bottom-line objectives, focus
on such things as career goals and adjustments your employee would
like to make in the area of work/life balance. Ask them what you
can do to support their goals. Be specific in your commitments and
make sure to follow up with team members to ensure that things are
moving in the direction they want. When employees have a sense of
control over their work and environment, studies show that their
level of stress is reduced and satisfaction increased. As a manager,
you have an important part to play in this regard.
