Once a manager has recognized that an employee has "checked out"
an opportunity is still available for the manager to improve the
situation and take steps to retain the employee.
The first and most important thing for a manager to do when he
or she recognizes the signs of a disengaged employee is sit down
and talk to the employee about their current situation. In your
conversation try to answer the following questions:
- What does this individual value most in a job? (Eg. Independence,
creativity, the chance to do leading edge work, etc.)
- What are this employee's career goals? Where do they see the
gaps between their career goals and current responsibilities?
- What is contributing to this employee's current level of dissatisfaction?
(Note: There is generally more than one contributing factor).
- If they could change one thing that would make a difference
to their job satisfaction, what would that be?
By asking the above key questions and creating an opportunity for
an honest and open dialogue, you as a manager have an opportunity
to retain a valuable employee and ensure they remain satisfied and
motivated within the organization. The next step is to take action
to demonstrate your commitment to the employee.
